Ahoy from the Atlantic

4-17-13 Ascension Island

It’s been a few days at sea now.  We were supposed to do to Ascension Island 2 days after St. Helena, but alas the tides didn’t cooperate.  No visiting the feral donkeys or the grassless golf course for us today.  So we had the locals aboard for a bit, selling their souvenirs.  We had bought some stamps in St. Helena- they had both locales postage, so we just bought some postcards and stamps to mail them with.   I think the mail boat was on its way the day after we left so it might make it home sometime this summer.

After the visitors had left us, the Captain circumnavigated the island.  The travel guide, Barbara, presented us with commentary during this time.  The island is mainly used for the British and some US Military.  They have one of the major gps/navigation satellite controls there as well.  Funny thing is, my gps in my camera wouldn’t register where we were even though we were so close to the satellite.  “Mysteriously”, the ship’s internet wasn’t working then either.

As we were sailing around, a pod of dolphins joined us for a bit of fun.  I didn’t get the best pictures but some nice fellow guests have supplied me with some good ones.
