Middle of the Atlantic

April 15, 2013  Jamestown, St. Helena
St. Helena Island

Jamestown Harbor- very Mediterraen influenced
Today we are on an island in the South Atlantic Ocean that is a British Overseas Territory.  It sits 1200 miles off the coast of Africa.  There is a population of 6000 on the island and they  have no airport.  They have a mail boat come about every 5 weeks.  They happened to be there today with us so our postcards might arrive in a somewhat timely fashion.  We did stop in to the Post Office to get a postmark from here and to purchase stamps as souvenirs.

This is where Napoleon was exiled to after escaping Elba.  He actually died here in 1821 and was buried before being relocated next to the Seine at a later time.

They are also home to the oldest Anglican church south of the equator.  The other highlight of renown is the tortoise, Johnathan.  He is the oldest living creature on Earth at over 120 years old.  He is in the gardens at Plantation House.

The high point of our day was Jacob’s Ladder.  “C”, Dad, & I climbed this steep staircase.  It is 699 steps up to the top of the mountain, and in the old days supplies had to be carried up this route before the roads were built.  It took me 45 mins to get up, Dad & “C” got up a bit faster.  We then climbed down to the bottom.  All in all, including the wander up at the top it took 1 ½ hours.  I’m sure we will all be a bit sore tomorrow.

After some souvenir shopping we headed back to the ship for a well-deserved sandwich from John and a swim in the pool.
